Vivek Joshi was appointed as an Election Commissioner of India on Monday. As per the law, a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) or an Election Commissioner (EC) must retire upon turning 65 or after serving a six-year term in the Election Commission. Prior to this, Sushil Chandra, who was serving as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)agilaplay, was appointed as an EC, resigning from the CBDT before joining the Election Commission.
In addition, Gyanesh Kumar has been elevated to the position of the next Chief Election Commissioner. He is the first CEC to be appointed under the new law governing the appointment of members to the Election Commission.
Who is Vivek Joshi?
Vivek Joshi, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Haryana cadre, was born on May 21, 1966. He will serve as an Election Commissioner until 2031. Joshi, who previously served as the Chief Secretary of Haryana, was on central deputation starting from January 2019.
During his tenure as the 26th CEC,jilicrown Gyanesh Kumar will oversee the Bihar Assembly elections later this year, as well as the Kerala and Puducherry Assembly elections in 2026. He will also manage the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, scheduled for 2026.
Kumar, who played a significant role in the implementation of decisions following the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir while serving in the Union Home Ministry, assumed the role of Election Commissioner on March 15, 2024.

Kumar’s appointment came shortly after the Congress party urged the government to delay the decision on the new CEC until the Supreme Court concludes its hearing on a petition challenging the composition of the selection panel.
